Pictured above, a bit blurry, I’m afraid, is my 7″ x 9″ painting, oil on linen on panel, with a wooden floater frame, on display in the Dalton Gallery at the Center for the Arts in Rock Hill, SC as part of the Members Show. I began this painting when I was anchored by bow and stern lines in my jon boat off Nivens Creek Boat Landing near Fort Mill. The river cane stalks reached out like giant feather dusters, brilliantly green. There was a rope swing. The bank glowed reddish-pink.
It’s fun to paint in a boat, with a thermos of coffee at your feet, and paint brushes trying to roll away as lake swells come and go, but you certainly can’t get fine detail finished. I completed it in studio, adding the fisherman for human interest. If you look closely, you can spot the red-and-white plastic bobber on top of the water. The painting is priced at $135.
My painting, Tega Cay Living Memorial Garden, pictured below, will be on display with others from the Catawba River Art Guild members from January 27th- March 19th 2022 in the Bliss Gallery in Belmont, NC. It’s a 7″ x 5″ oil on linen on panel, with a wooden floater frame. It’s priced at $130. I began it at a Center for the Arts plein air event, and finished it in studio. How lovely those roses smelled! It’s a magical garden, truly. I had fun adding the tiny birds.
I do both visual art and creative writing. My education includes an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, a BS and a BA from Winthrop University, two years of Great Books Program study at St. John’s College, and coursework from UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University Continuing Studies. I have taken visual art classes and workshops through City Art, the Arts Council of York County and the Art Students League in New York. I have held numerous jobs, including working as an office assistant, a busgirl, a bosun’s mate, a security guard, a long-haul trucker, a lab technician, a barista, a night technician at a primate facility, a university-level writing instructor and a kayak guide.
My poem “Passing Among Strangers,” a third-place contest winner, was published in the 2021 Hippocrates Awards Anthology. My poem “Error” appeared in The Examined Life Journal and my poem “Capsize” was published in The Cotton Alley Writers Review as an honorable mention. My fiction has appeared in Ploughshares and my nonfiction in SIC : a Journal of Literature, Culture, and Literary Translation. I am at work on finding a home for my poetry chapbook, and on completing a novel and three nonfiction books.
