Forthcoming Short Story In Cotton Alley Writers’ Review

I am pleased to announce that my short story, At the Doctor, was selected for a $75 second-place award in the Adult Fiction category of the 2024 Arts Council of York County Literary Competitions. Congratulations to all the other winners! My short story begins on page 18 of the PDF posted below.

I try to notice changes in society before they enter mainstream cultural discourse. Many years ago I began a story called Angie Sits in a Chair, about an administrative assistant whose health deteriorated after years behind a desk. Eventually workplace inactivity problems became widely-recognized, and the phrase ‘sitting is the new smoking’ was popularized. I had to release my character from her situation, so she wriggled out of character-jail and emerged at the doctor’s office.

My story begins on page 19 of the PDF below. Enjoy!
