I am pleased to announce that my short story, At the Doctor, was selected for a $75 second-place award in the Adult Fiction category of the 2024 Arts Council of York County Literary Competitions. I try to notice changes in society before they enter mainstream cultural discourse. Many years ago I began a story called Angie Sits in a Chair, about an administrative assistant whose health deteriorated after years behind a desk. Eventually workplace inactivity problems became widely-recognized, and the phrase ‘sitting is the new smoking’ was popularized. I had to release my character from her situation, so she wriggled out of character-jail and emerged at the doctor’s office.
